What is this cyber security about?

This page provides information on PPNDAP cyber security approach for connected products, including how we display each product’s security update support (end) period and how to report security vulnerabilities.

In Australia, mandatory cyber security requirements now apply to most consumer smart devices manufactured on or after 4 March 2026. These requirements are designed to improve the security of connected products and help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. For in-scope products, these include the use of unique passwords, a published process for reporting security issues, and clear disclosure of each product’s security update support (end) period.

PPNDAP ensures that in‑scope products meet these requirements and follows established international best‑practice standards for consumer device security.

For all in-scope products manufactured on or after 4 March 2026, PPNDAP prepares and retains a statement of compliance in accordance with Australian cyber security regulatory requirements.

Statements of compliance

A statement of compliance PPNDAP prepares for each in-scope product manufactured on or after 4 March 2026, includes:

• Product identification information
• Manufacturer details
• Confirmation that the product complies with applicable Australian cyber security requirements
• The applicable security update support (end) period

Statements of compliance are prepared for in-scope products, retained for a minimum of five years, and made available upon request.

Which products are covered?

The Australian cyber security rules apply to certain consumer smart devices that connect directly or indirectly to the internet. Some products are excluded from these rules, such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and any products that are not intended for personal, domestic, or household use, or are of a kind that is unlikely to be used for those purposes.

Password protections
For devices that use a password, the new rules remove default or easily guessed passwords and enforce stronger password practices.
This helps keep devices more secure and reduces the risk of unauthorised access.
